Black Cat & Pendle Witches Brew Black Cat takes top award at the Great British Beer Festival! Click here to read more.
Lancashire Ales Moorhouses Brewery was established in 1870 by William Moorhouse in the town of Burnley. The brewery originally made a hop flavored soft drink. The brewery remained in the Moorhouse family for generations. Although today it is not family owned, the traditions and values established by the Moorhouse family have been maintained. The beer names and labels come from the rich lore about the Lancashire Witches of Pendle Hill which is near Burnley. The area is steeped in the mystique of brewing potions and witchcraft. In 1612 nine local people were hanged for practicing the black arts and whispers about Witches Brew were abundant. Visitors to the Lancashire area can follow the trail that the Pendle Witches followed on their way to trial.
Today, Black Cat and Pendle Witches Brew have replaced the potions of history. Pendle Witches Brew is a full malty flavored beer with a distinct hop after taste and is 5.1% ABV. Black Cat is a dark refreshing beer, what is known as a dark mild with a distinct chocolate malt flavor and is 3.4% ABV. Awards: Quotes:
Black Cat - We marvelled at its aroma and palate that spoke of liquorice, molasses, smoked malt and bitter chocolate, with a good whack of hops as the underpinning. |
